MACL: Velana Terminals Will Remain Under Local Control

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has strongly refuted social media rumours suggesting that operations of terminals at Velana International Airport (VIA) are being transferred to foreign companies.

The clarification comes amid widespread speculation online that the airport’s VIP terminal is set to be leased to a Dubai-based firm under a long-term agreement. Addressing the matter, a senior MACL official confirmed to state broadcaster PSM News that no such arrangement exists.

“There is no decision to hand over the operation of any terminal at VIA to a foreign party,” the official stated, adding that while MACL regularly receives proposals from international companies, including one from a Dubai-based entity, no agreements have been made.

The official emphasized that any decision regarding airport operations would be taken with the utmost consideration for the national interest and the sustainability of MACL’s services.

In a related development, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed also denied reports that the government plans to outsource the operations of Hanimaadhoo International Airport. He affirmed that no such handover is being considered by the current administration.

The government and MACL’s statements come as part of a broader effort to quell misinformation and reassure the public of the administration’s commitment to retaining local control over key national infrastructure.
