Ship Carrying 300 Metric Tonnes of Goods from India to Arrive in Addu

MV Niumath

A vessel carrying 300 metric tonnes of cargo from Tuticorin, India, is set to dock at the Hithadhoo Regional Port in Addu City on Wednesday. The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) confirmed that the ship, named MV Niumath, will be delivering a range of goods, including vegetables, fruits, and other general cargo items.

MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh shared the news via social media, emphasizing the significance of this delivery. He highlighted that the regular shipments from India to Addu mark a success in the government’s efforts to establish a consistent supply chain between the two regions. Wajeeh stated, “This is the success of the government’s efforts to move cargo from India to Addu permanently.”

The initiative to bring perishable goods directly to Addu began in July, with wooden ships initially being used for the transport of foodstuffs. However, through collaboration between MPL and Hithadhoo Port, the transportation has since transitioned to steel vessels operated by India’s Finance Group, ensuring more reliable and consistent deliveries.

The first ship under this permanent arrangement arrived in Addu on July 10, carrying 150 tonnes of cargo. This latest shipment on MV Niumath represents a continuation of that successful operation.

Additionally, the Maldives State Shipping (MSS) has been playing a crucial role in supporting the supply chain by transporting perishable goods between Addu and Malé. MSS ships bring goods from abroad to Malé and then facilitate the distribution of these items to Addu City, further strengthening the region’s access to essential supplies.
